What is Hairfall?

It is an increasingly noticeable situation that a poor, modern lifestyle is having an adverse effect on our health and to specifically mention-hair loss. High amounts of anxiety, stress and worry has led to severe hair loss and premature greying of hair. As your skin needs regular nourishment, so does your hair. It needs nutrition from the inside out. If a person’s diet is in deficit of hair friendly foods or the digestion is not proper, then it leads to thinning of hair, hair loss from the roots and eventually results in baldness.

There is always a little amount of hair fall which is considered normal as the old hair gets replaced by new ones. But when the hair falls at an excessive rate, it is necessary to take immediate precautions. When these problems occur at a younger age, one must consider taking remedies to resolve the issue and promote natural growth of the hair. Along with physical health, one should certainly look into mental and emotional health.

While eating fried, sour, salty and fermented foods, the Pitta Dosha in the body gets aggravated. This accumulates in the skin of the scalp, which leads to premature greying of hair and hairfall.

How does Ayurveda help in curing Hair Fall?

Ayurved looks at the root Cause of the problem and decides the treatment according to your typical Dosha. It will aim at the exact cause, unlike trial and error methods.

Following are the common problems which occur due to specific dosha :

Vata Dosha

When this is high, the scalp tissues get dehydrated. Due to harmful UV radiations, the hair follicles lack protein. This creates dry hair and split ends. These follicles become permanently damaged, causing hair loss.

Kapha Dosha

It causes over secretion of sebum. Due to sebum, the hair follicles get blocked and it does not receive nutrients from the roots. It even leads to dandruff. Ayurved tries to understand the underlying issue and then provides a holistic treatment.

Hair Oiling

Hair quality directly depends on how well you nourish the scalp. What better way to oil them with the best ingredients like coconut oil, sesame oil, Neem. Almond or Bhringraj Oil. Do a nice hot massage of ‘Champi’ every week and nourish the hair follicles.

Pitta Dosha

When this is in excess, the scalp tissues absorb the excess heat from inside the body. This results in the hair follicles being inflamed, thereby weakening the hair roots. It also leads to premature greying.

Ayurvedic Herbs

There is nothing better than the age-old wisdom of Ayurveda herbs. Shikakai (Soap Pod), Reetha (Soap Nut), Triphala (Haritaki+Bibhitaki+Amalaki), Kumari (Aloe vera), Amla (Indian Gooseberry), Japa (Hibiscus), Methi (Fenugreek), Nimba(Neem), etc. are some of the commonly used Ayurvedic ingredients for Hair cleansing.

Home Remedies to Control Hair Fall

Do not comb wet hair

Some of us comb their tangles right after they wash their hair. But our hair is the most vulnerable to breakage when they are wet. So, aggressive combining or any heat styling should be strictly avoided. Use a wide-toothed comb to detangle hair once they have dried. Use non-sticky hair oil or a serum to manage the knots.

Regular Exercise

A regular exercise regimen helps you stay fit. It ensures proper blood circulation and muscle functioning. Some anti-stress relieving practices like pranayam and yoga will help to sooth your nervous system. It will give you physical as well as mental wellbeing.

Cut Down Stress

The most harmful effect is that of stress. Stress can disrupt your whole system and adversely affects hair health. It hinders the hair growth process and leads to premature greying of hair. Therefore, it is very advisable to cut down on your stress levels and save yourself from all the trouble. Calm yourself with some soothing music or meditation.

Sufficient Sleep

As per Ayurveda, sleep is the most important factor to maintain the healthy levels of your doshas. The body repairs and regenerates itself when we sleep. The stem cell activity promotes hair growth.
Irregular sleep causes stress build up. A sound sleep of 6-8 hrs from 10pm to 5am is considered ideal.

Avoid Hot Showers

Often many people have the habit of bathing with hot water regularly. In winters it is okay, but hot water dehydrates the hair and it rips off the scalp of its natural oil. The hair in turn becomes brittle and breaks off easily. Try using lukewarm water instead.

Nutritious and Dosha Balancing Diet

Ayurveda recommends eating a Sattvic diet. It is necessary to acquire essential nutrients everyday. Cucumbers, pumpkins, green leafy vegetables, Yogurt, amla, peppermint, coriander, Nuts and Seeds, beans, carrots, are some of the excellent sources of all vital nutrients required for a healthy hair growth.

  • Eating adequate amounts of natural protein.
  • Eating appropriate levels of useful carbohydrates.
  • Achieving a healthy balance of dietary fats.

Skin

From an ayurvedic perspective, the major underlying cause of disease is improper diet and lifestyle. If you pursue a diet or lifestyle that goes against your prakruti, you can develop a bodily imbalance that gives rise to skin disorders.

While imbalance of any dosha may cause skin disease, it is associated more with pitta imbalance (the heat element). Any activity that increases the fire or heat element in the body aggravates pitta and can lead to skin problems.

Ayurveda states that sluggish liver (dysfunction of the liver) associated with doshic imbalance causes skin diseases. The accumulation of toxins (ama) in the liver breaks out through the skin.

How Does Ayurveda Approach Skin Disease?

Before treating skin diseases from an ayurvedic perspective, it is necessary to analyse the person and their skin conditions. The doctor diagnoses the doshic composition of the individual, their diet and lifestyle, their pulse and their skin health.

The goal of ayurvedic treatment is to restore doshic balance. Treatment methods involve a healthy diet and lifestyle with proper balance of food, exercise, herbs, meditation, and daily routines. There are also several ayurvedic therapies, such as traditional ayurvedic massage (abhyanga), designed to restore balance and promote skin health.

The best therapy to treat accumulation of toxins in the body is ayurvedic detox (panchakarma). As a complete program of cleansing and detoxifying, panchakarma flushes all toxins from the body at the cellular level. When the body is clear of toxins, it gains equilibrium, and the organs, including the skin, begin to function normally again.

Ayurveda always looks for the root cause of disease. While there are many helpful herbs and ointments that bring temporary relief to wounds, skin irritation or lesions, Ayurveda always looks to the underlying cause so the patient can restore their body to healthy balance and eliminate the symptoms of skin disease.
