What are the General Causes of Migraine?

According to modern medicine, the etiology of migraine is unknown. Modern medicine assumes that aberrant brain activity disrupts nerve signals, the activity of neurotransmitters, and blood vessels in the brain. And this disruption causes migraine.

What are the Causes of Migraine according to Ayurveda?

Unlike modern medicine, Ayurveda defines a specific cause for migraine in terms of metabolic patterns called dosha.

There are three metabolic patterns or systems that run the body – vata, pitta and kapha. The three doshas are bio-physical energies with distinct features, and functions. Ayurveda says that a vitiation in vata  and kapha dosha leads to migraine.

Vata is the metabolic pattern that governs all movements inside the body, whereas kapha dosha ensures stability and nourishment. Since vata is responsible for all movement inside and outside the body; it directly influences the nervous system. However, excess vata dosha leads to nervous hyperactivity which may result in migraine.

What are the migraine symptoms described in Ayurveda?

Charak Samhita, the authoritative text on Ayurvedic general medicine, says that vitiated vata influences the half part of the head region, that the temporal region, ears, eyes, forehead on one side of the head and produces sharp pain.

Charak Samhita describes migraine with another very interesting term – arani manthan. (Arani – wood, manthan – churning). Acharya Charak says that a person suffering from a migraine attack experiences severe pain as if someone is churning his head with a piece of wood. Migraine pain is also compared to the pain experienced when you receive a severe injury from a sharp object.
